Message from NWS Director Jack Hayes

Wind Profiler Data Outage

As I discussed during the National Town Hall meeting on Sept. 25, effective October 1, 2008, all NOAA wind profiler products have been temporarily suspended for a period of approximately 3 to 5 weeks.

The suspension in availability of wind profiler data is necessary to protect critical NWS IT systems from recently identified IT security threats. The wind profiler network currently operates on obsolete equipment that cannot support necessary IT security methods, and interconnection to major NWS systems extends the vulnerability to the entire NWS IT infrastructure.

In the short term, we are working with NOAA Research to migrate the data to MADIS. This measure will provide hourly wind profiler data, but will not include any 6-minute profiler data products. We are continuing to work to make 6-minute data available and will update you on our progress at a later date.

The long-term solution will ensure security of the network by replacing the equipment. The replacement will start in the October 2009 time frame.

While this was not an easy decision, I am confident that it is the right decision and will allow us to ensure NWS IT security without unduly compromising our ability to deliver our mission to our customers, partners, and the Nation.

-Jack
